Deaths ... ROBERTSON MOUNT AIRY— Dr. Charles G. Robertson Jr., a prominent local physician, passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, after a long illness. He practiced medicine in the Mount Airy area for 43 years until his health made it impossible to continue the profession he loved. His family, friends and patients loved him and his passing is an irreplaceable loss. Dr. Robertson grew up in the Quaker faith in White Plains, the son of Charles Gurvey and Alma Robertson. He has one brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Nancy Robertson; a sister, Bertie Robertson Cooper; and a brotherin-law, Jerry Helton and the late Charlie Cooper and Sara Robertson Helton, brothers and sister by marriage Charles Henry Carter and Nelda and Bill Luffman. Dr. Robertson completed undergraduate school at Guilford College and medical school at UNC Chapel Hill. He did his internship at Geisinger Medical Hospital in Danville, Pa., preceded by his residency in City Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem. There he met his wife Lorraine. Dr. Robertson practiced in Mount Airy for over four decades with dedication where his patients began to revere him. His bedside manner was reminiscent of the traditional physician, making house calls at night with concern and care. His compassion for all people was limitless. The doctor was on the medical staff of Northern Hospital of Surry County for 40 years. He served the community in other capacities including chief of staff of Northern Hospital of Surry County, president of the American Red Cross Surry County Chapter, president of the Kiwanis Club, Surry Arts Council board member, medical director of Central Continuing Care Nursing Home and member of Central United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Carter Robertson. He had three devoted daughters: Ellen and Bob Stevens of Raleigh, Jane and John Malone of Charlotte and Betsy Charles Robertson of Greenville, S.C. Dr. Robertson delighted in his four grandchildren: Matthew Joseph, Ryan Bouer, Rachel Ellen and Eric Charles Stevens. Dr. Robertson had several nieces and nephews who were special to him. This list includes Lynn and Terry Faust, Joe Cooper, Eric and Susan Wiseman, Sharon and Lisa Helton, Thomas Robertson and Dawn and Bill Davis. During his illness, Dr. Robertson was cared for by wonderful health-care professionals and those with him at the time of his passing included Brenda Collins, Kenneth Black, Tracy Kinder, Crystal Crouse and Howard Davis. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The funeral will be held Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m. in Central United Methodist Church. Memorials may be directed to Central United Methodist Church, 1909 N. Main, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to White Plains Friends Meeting Cemetery Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 3, White Plains, NC 27031.
