Notes:

John Marion Marshall had twelve children by his wife, Christina Sparger. Then he left his family and went to Texas with another Frankie Pate. There it is reported that he raised another family of twelve children. I have no information about his death or where he is buried.
!Marshall 0241, pp. 1, 9 - This source, a letter from Robert K. Marshall to Gurney Robertson, dated 9/17/1925, sheds some light on John's second wife, Frankie Pate. It says that John wrote a letter to "Uncle Sam" (Samuel Edward Marshall?) and a letter to Martha Eleanor (Marshall) Saunders asking if he could return to Surry County with his "second wife." I am not sure that either letter exists now, or maybe they never did.

!More information - Apparently he and Frankie went to Indianapolis, Indiana. There he met a man who owned a ranch in the area of San Antonio, Texas. The man hired John to go to Texas and look after his ranch. While John was in route to Texas, the man died in Indianapolis.

The census data below places him firmly in San Antonio, Texas in 1880. Apparently, Frankie had died.

Below is ore information from Gilmer Robertson. He sent it to me January 5, 2002 in response to a message I broadcast to my distribution list offering a $100 reward for anyone who could find John.

Dear David,It is nice to get your emails although I seldom respond. I'm not sure if I ever told you this or not (I probably did, but it's been too many years to know) but my Aunt Bettye Marshall Robertson told me that her husband Merlin actaually went to John Marion's grave in Texas. Merlin and Bettye lived in Waco for many years and my recollection is that she said Merlin set out to track his down and met one of John's sons or grandsons-she couldn't remember what town the grave was located in. Merlin and Bettye were cousins-Merlin's grandfather was John Marion and I believe that Bettye was John Marion's great-granddaughter. Bettye died in 1976 and I had talked with her about this probably in the early 70's so I am fuzzy on this one but it seems that John changed his name. I'm pretty sure she said he became just John Marion and dropped the Marshall completely. Well, that should be enought to confuse all of us- perhaps someday all of this will be discovered. Keep up the good work-I could use the $100 to pay for Xmas but I don't think I have the time to do any research. Hope you are both well.

Nice to hear from you. Seems strange that a man born 200 years ago is still bothering his two families with puzzling questions! It would be nice to work them out. I believe that the death certificate is a child of John Marion, just too many things fall into place. Two mysteries in the certificate, Frankie's last Arthur, and born in Indiana. Was she in fact born in Indiana and maybe that's why she and John initially moved back to her area, or is it that when Frankie died her children thought that because they came from Indiana to Texas that is where they assumed she was born? The "informant" was Ida Crockett who had knowledge of his parents name, and I would think a family member?. Perhaps we could tract her line. I wonder if Frankie were born either a Pate or an Arthur, and married either a Pate or an Arthur before John Marion; and either one could have been her maiden name. Just a thought. When our cousin Robert Marshall spent time in White Plains gathering his information in 1925 the bulk of it was from Garland, younger brother of John Marion. Also my Uncle Gurney Robertson was involved in the compilation with follow up questions, just not sure who had what imput.

His information about the first of our Marshalls in the area is pretty accurate, I believe Garland only knew or recalled of the children by Martin's second wife. As far as the information about John Marion, I did track down that he was a member of the home guard during the war, and he was in fact the revenue officer. But the other information about his being a state representative and in the house of representatives after the war I could never find any evidence of that. I thought I covered all avenues at the time to confirm/deny that, but maybe there's something that I didn't locate. I think there has got to be some element of truth to this and didn't come out of nowhere, maybe he ran and was defeated? Also, I would have thought that if Garland knew enough to know John Marion's "other woman's" first name why would he have been wrong about the last? Her name certainly would have to have been discussed within all the family for years after the two left White Plains. Time will hopefully tell.
