Unnumbered Documents - Talbott, Joseph W. Civil War Letter

I purchased this letter for $150 from BJ's Stamps and Coins, 6342 W. Bell Rd., Glendale, Arizona 85308 in February, 2011. They contacted me by email because they found Joseph's name on my website. There is documentation with the letter that positively identifies him as part of my wife's, Ruth Elizabeth Talbot's, family. He is her 5th cousin, 5 times removed.

The letter is fragile and difficult to read, but the coin shop engaged a genealogist, Tanja Turtsany, to transcribe the letter. The transcription is included with the letter.

Joseph was a Private in the Eightieth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The package includes information about that unit and their campaigns during the Civil War. He wrote the letter on May 23, 1863 while he was 4 miles below Vicksburg, Mississippi.

the 1900 census records of Carroll County, Ohio shows his birth year as 1841.
