"This month we salute Errol Edwin Hayes, Elkin, N. C.

"In every State, City, Organization and Profession, one will find many
    forms of mankind, the builder . . . the leader . . . the diplomat . . . the
thinker . . . the doer . . . the scrapper; and then those who are just citizens,
residents and members. Once in a while one will see a man possessing one or
more of the mentioned attributes, but seldom does one run across a man
possessing all these fine virtures . . . but, if you will add kindliness . . .
and a constant desire to see that everything in every channel is running better
than true to form . . . then immediately Errol Edwin Hayes (known as Earl)
    comes to mind.

"Born thirty-eight years ago in Boonville, he received his elementary
education in Surry county, then finished the N. G. A. C., at Dalenoga, Georgia,
where he majored in business engineering. After finishing his schooling, he
started out to see the world . . . go places and do things. The farther he
traveled from Surry county the more he became infected with the little love bug
and homesickness, for he had left the finest little girl in the foothills of
Blowing Rock . . . and she was waiting for his return home. The suffering and
pain was too much for Earl, so he returned to Surry county and immediately
asked Miss Nina Whitaker to be Mrs. Errol Edwin Hayes. At this period of his
life . . . historians failed to record further data . . . some say Miss Whitaker placed Earl on a six months' probation period . . . others say twelve months . . . but it is a fact that Earl walked the chalk-line. County records record the marriage. Mr. Hayes then entered the Furniture and Funeral Directing business.

"Mr. Hayes has been known for many years as among the front rank Funeral
Directors of the state, and his career as helper in burial association work has
added to that esteem in such a way as to build him up as a logical candidate
for a certificate of leadership. His ability is well known, his urbane yet
wholly sincere personality well liked and widely respected, and his intense
devotion to civic matters and other public-spirited interests, outside of his
work for the funeral directing profession, speaks of what caliber of man he is.

"A member of the firm of Hayes & Speas, Inc., of Elkin, Mr. Hayes enjoys a
wide and varied friendship among the good people of Surry and adjoining
counties. Whenever you feel a desire to visit . . . and want a change of
scenery pleasing to the eyes . . . some pure mountain air and water . . . drive
up to see Mr. Hayes . . . your troubles will disappear . . . and you'll feel
much better for having had the visit and chat."

Errol married Nina Florence WHITAKER on 3 Jun 1923 in Dobson, Surry County, North Carolina. Nina (daughter of William Wesley WHITAKER and Charlotte Eleanor HARRELL, (Lottie)) was born on 25 Jul 1900 in Pilot Mountain, Surry County, North Carolina; died on 1 Apr 1966 in Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina; was buried on 3 Apr 1966 in Elkin, Surry County, North Carolina.
