On James H. Vanhoy b. 1775 d. 1845 as for his middle name. My thinking is Hamilton

Reasoning: In surveying My chart that I have it shows that the Vanhoy men in almost all cases named their sons after themselves, Father, brothers, and then there are numerous Claytons in the Vanhoy Men. Susanna Clayton must have been one very special person.

I heard the argument for Hart as the middle name but that Hart did not come into the family until after his birth so given there are several of his ancestors who were name Hamilton,Ham. I would say that his middle name is Hamilton and not Hart.

Another interesting feature James H. Vanhoy and his Wife Frances ( whom may have been a Love) had a son named John M. Vanhoy he is buried at Love Methodist cemetery Perry Township, Martin County, Ind. 2 miles NE of Loogootee, Ind. Wouldn't want to bet his middle name is Marshall would you ?

As for there son Charles Vanhoy (my gg grandfather) who married Rebecca Greenwell (who was Catholic) they were married by James Newton Love J.P. in Martin County I found a copy of the marriage license.

haven't really been able to sit down and do to much of this lately as other duties have taken up a lot of my time lately. It has been wonderful hearing from you David, and when I get my paper work completed here I will get back to you with all the info. There is one thing that does interest me, i have taken notice that a large segment of families and I mean 100's of families seem to have moved down the East Coast from Staten Island, NY, to Del, to Va. and then to NC. and they seemed to have done this all at the same time and stayed in touch with one another. I have tried finding just the right history book on NC. that would explain its settlement and the people that helped settle it and the various religious sects that were part of this settlement of NC. Once I have that and read it and then I will understand pretty-well what actually took place back then.

Well I have taken up enough of your time.
    Take Care My Friend,
    Paul VanHoy

David I thought you should be included in on this.

Interesting facts have arisen in the family of James Hamilton Vanhoy's his wife Frances b. Dec. 1790 Va. When and were her and James were married remains unknown in actuality but by mathematical equations it is suspected that they were married no earlier that DEC 1805 and not later than the summer of 1806.
James's Brother Abraham married Verlinda Marshall in Dec. 1805 and their first child, a son, was named John Marshall Vanhoy.
James and Frances had 11 children of which there were five boys and the youngest was named John Marshall Vanhoy and is buried at Love Cemetery, Martin County, IN at his father's right hand.
Given that before 1850 it was almost impossible to track down who was who we have all been left to deal with what written documents our ancestors have left behind to help in our research. I suspect that James H. Vanhoy's wife Frances's maiden name was Marshall and that they were married in a double ceremony with Abraham and Verlinda in Stokes County, NC.
Now on to the other part. I was under the impression that James and Frances had 5 boys and 5 girls but this past two weeks has uncovered some interesting facts.
James Hamilton Vanhoy died Aug. 20, 1845 and he died intestate (without a will).
    The following summer a Probate hearing was held and a probate agreement signed or marked by members of the family leaving the estate to Frances, Rebecca, and Charles. The Document was signed on Aug. 3, 1846 and filed at the end of the month. In attendance were the following;

    Rebecca Vanhoy
    Joseph Hays & his wife
Elizabeth Hays (formerly Elizabeth Dobson born 1811 NC)
Milton D. Love and wife Rachel (Vanhoy) Love
    John Vanhoy
Clayton Vanhoy & wife Mary (Walker) Vanhoy
    William M. Fair & wife Nancy (Vanhoy b. Feb 19, 1808) Fair
    Charles Vanhoy, Attorney

Not in Attendance or mentioned are Abraham Vanhoy who married Nancy Sullivan
and Permelia (Vanhoy) presumed to have died in Morgan County, IN in 1839

The odd thing that I caught was the attendance of Joseph Hays & his wife Elizabeth.
I did some research through the Family Search web site and found Joseph Hays married to Elizabeth Dobson b. 1811 NC. They were married Aug. 1830. I decided to go back a bit farther. The 70 Acres that James Hamilton Vanhoy purchased in 1829 in Perry Township, Martin County, IN. was from William and Elizabeth Dobson and there is a record of a Joseph Dobson who married an Elizabeth Vanhoy In NC on 31 Oct., 1826, I strongly suspect that this Elizabeth Vanhoy is the daughter of James Hamilton Vanhoy and Frances Marshall.
I also believe that Elizabeth Dobson b. 1811 NC is Elizabeth Vanhoy and she left some clues to her identity behind.
Joseph Hays and his wife Elizabeth Dobson had seven children and their first son b. 1831 was named William Clayton Hays the fifth child a girl b. 1840 was named Nancy and married a Stuckey.

The Census of 1830 for Perry Twp. Martin County, IN shows 5 girls in the household of James Vanhoy. The Census of 1840 only shows two. Two of the three that are not there are Rachel Vanhoy who married Milton D, Love Dec. 1835
and Permelia who married Lewis Scott Feb. 3, 1833 in Morgan County, IN.
The other I suspect was the widow of Joseph W. or William J. Dobson and married Joseph Hays Aug. 1830.

I meant to say that the Marshall family, among the women, would give their sons the middle name Marshall. This was passed onto me by a gentleman that had done considerable research on the Marshall family also. That is why I think that Frances is in fact a Marshall.

I leave you with this and if I have left out anything or there are questions please feel free to ask.

I hope that I have done the best to explain my presumption and the research that it is based upon.

    Sincerely:
    Paul D. VanHoy

In the name of God, Amen. I Abraham Vanhoy, of Henry County and state of
Missouri, while I am in sound mind and memory, I do hereby declare and publish this as my last will and testament. In the first place I design my body to the dust and my soul to God and my wish is that after my death my body shall be buried in decent Christianlike manner. My desire is this: I have but little property to dispose of or to will to my children, therefore pay any just debts that I have contracted in the state of Missouri, Henry County, out of my personal property. After my debts have been paid I will all my property both land and personal property to my beloved wife, Verlinda, during her natural life, and after her death then the estate that my Beloved wife had in her hands I will unto my Daughter, Pollina and her heirs, who has been a faithful child to take care of her father and mother. This is to her and her heirs forever.
I will unto my son, John M. Vanhoy, one dollar. One dollar to William
Walker. One dollar to son-in-law Harmon Miller, one dollar to son-in-law
Thomas Miller, one dollar to Ashael Hart, one dollar to Alfred Walker, one

Vanhoy all of shop tools, that is the gun smithing tools, one pair of plate molds, seven plates, plating jar and rollers. My blacksmith tools to be sold to pay my debts if any against me. It is my wish that there is to be no public sale of any of my propewrty except you think it best and if you do if there be any debts standing sell enough of the property to pay them. I nominate my son, John M. Vanhoy, as executor of this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have subscribed my name, my wishes and desires this 24 day of May 1858, A.D. Abraham Vanhoy b. 1813 Stokes County, NC d. Dec 15, 1846 NC. married Dec 10, 1839 to Nancy Sullivan. His parents James Hamilton Vanhoy// Frances ? b. Dec 1790 he b. Aug 1775

Abraham Vanhoy b. Jan 6, 1783 to John Vanhoy and Jemima (Marshall?) Stokes County, NC. d. Feb 1859 Henry County, Missouri married Dec 1805 to Verlinda Marshall in Stokes County, NC they came through Martin County around 1846 by Courthouse records. Eventually Settled in Henry Co., Missouri. They had 11 Children none named Abraham.

Hamilton Jones Vanhoy b. Feb 25, 1819 Stokes County, NC is the 6th child and 3rd son of Abraham Vanhoy and Verlinda Marshall.

Information on family of James Hamilton Vanhoy obtained from Opal Tice, and James Harold Vanhoy and Connie Floyd.

Information on Abraham Vanhoy and Verlinda Marshall family obtained and verified by Verla Hepburn, W.L. Hubka, and Jessie Walsh

All information was checked through Court Documents, Cemetery Registries, marriage documents.

Other information obtained from the Grandchildren of Edward Franklin Vanhoy and Grandchildren of William Ashley Vanhoy, all are descendants of Clayton Jonathan Vanhoy and Elizabeth Kirk.

QUESTIONS CONCERNING Issac Vanhoy b. Abt 1810 ca He was actually born 1806 one of 4 children born to Edward Vanhoy and Ruth ?? Information obtained by W.L. Hubka and Loraine Watt from US> Census of Stokes and Forsyth counties, NC. from 1800-1850.

In the first 4 generations of Vanhoys there are as many as 6 Abrahams, 2-3 John Marshall Vanhoys, William Vanhoys--Numerous the same with John, Charles, and Clayton Vanhoys. The Vanhoy men had a way of naming their male heirs after themselves, their parents, grandparents, uncles. The Repetitive use of the same name down through the generations is unbelievable. By the way the Name Clayton became popular after Abraham/Abram Vanhoy b. NY 1690 married Susannah Clayton and the name Susanna became popular also right up to present day.

Sherry, Your Abraham was born 1813 to James Hamilton Vanhoy & Frances ?? and he died in NC in 1846. The Abraham Vanhoy that died in Henry County, Missouri was the uncle of your Abraham and the brother to our ggg grandfather James Hamilton Vanhoy

One final clarification, the mention of who married Dr. William Walker. That is Elizabeth B. Vanhoy b. Nov 1809 to Abraham Vanhoy and Verlinda Marshall.

Does this help everyone? If not let me know and I'll see what I can do.

    Sincerely:
    Paul D. VanHoy

    The following summer a Probate hearing was held and a probate agreement signed or marked by members of the family leaving the estate to Frances, Rebecca, and Charles. The Document was signed on Aug. 3, 1846 and filed at the end of the month. In attendance were the following;

    Sincerely:
    Paul D. VanHoy

Well, basically Tombstones don't lie and when they agree with the Census records you have to think. The chart shows two Nancys and Betty Hicks & I have been chasing a "Ghost" called Ada Vanhoy, who supposedly was the daughter of James H. Vanhoy and found nothing to support it. So basically the only thing that got me going was that Kathleen High in Milwaukee said there had to be another Nancy and I thought about the law at that period in time and a Sister would have no legal claim on the estate of her brother but a daughter would and going through census records 1820-1840 led me in the right direction. Along with the fact that Permelia Vanhoy married her husband in Morgan County.

Now, my wife says I might be wrong about Catherine being a twin. John M. Vanhoy was born on Jan 25, 1830. My wife, a nurse says it is possible that Catherine was probably born later in the same year but I disagree as then she would not have been born by the time the census was taken, so that is how I determined that she is a twin.

Okay, to the issue of Lavinia Vanhoy, she is not the daughter of Abraham Vanhoy and Verlinda Marshall, but they did have a daughter named Ellenor C. Vanhoy who married Harmon Miller on Aug 15, 1832

Lavinia Vanhoy, on the other hand is the daughter of William Vanhoy and Margaret "Sally" Jacks b. abt 1828-1830 and married Thomas C. Miller Feb. 29, 1844.

Both Family Group Sheets compiled by W.L. Hubka information obtained Stokes County, NC marriage records.

David, from information from the tombstones of William M. Fairs and his wife Nancy (Vanhoy) it has been determined that this Nancy is not the Nancy born 1785 instead this Nancy was born Jan. 19, 1808, She also married William M. Fair on Oct 23, 1827 in Stokes County on the very same day as the Marriage of Clayton W. Vanhoy born 1807 and son of James Hamilton Vanhoy.

James Hamilton Vanhoy died intestate on Aug 20, 1845 in Martin County, Ind. and the following summer of 1846 there was a gathering of family to sign or affix their mark to a probate agreement. By the laws of that period the only way Nancy (Vanhoy) Fair would have any legal claim on his estate would be the fact that she was the daughter of James Hamilton Vanhoy & his wife Frances.

So a lot of people are under the assumption that Nancy Vanhoy, sister of James H. Vanhoy and daughter of John Vanhoy and Jemima Marshall, born 1785 is the Nancy Vanhoy that married William M. Fair b. 1805 and the assumption is incorrect.

So now I have discovered the existence of not two Nancy Vanhoy 1 born 1785 the other b. 1817 but a third the oldest daughter of James H. Vanhoy b. Jan. 19, 1808 Stokes County, NC married Oct 23, 1827 at Love Methodist Church, NC. d. Dec. 30, 1850 Morgan County, Indiana buried Old Williams Cemetery, Morgan County, Ind.

    Have a Happy Day.

Received e-mail from a Dr. James Anderson a retired History teacher that lives up around Cleveland. He descends from Milton D. (Douglas) Love and Rachel D. Vanhoy daughter of James Hamilton Vanhoy. Milton and Rachel were his mothers great great grandparents and his records show that Rachel's middle name was Dorcas. In checking source of name it is biblical but it is also Gaelic-Scottish. FYI Paul Vanhoy

    Sincerely:
    Paul D. VanHoy

    The following summer a Probate hearing was held and a probate agreement signed or marked by members of the family leaving the estate to Frances, Rebecca, and Charles. The Document was signed on Aug. 3, 1846 and filed at the end of the month. In attendance were the following;

    Sincerely:
    Paul D. VanHoy

    Sincerely:
    Paul D. VanHoy

    The following summer a Probate hearing was held and a probate agreement signed or marked by members of the family leaving the estate to Frances, Rebecca, and Charles. The Document was signed on Aug. 3, 1846 and filed at the end of the month. In attendance were the following;

    Sincerely:
    Paul D. VanHoy

Elizabeth Vanhoy b. 1812 married William Joseph Dobson 1826.

This one got real interesting, I believe the marriage bond shows him as Joseph and land sales deed in Martin County Indiana shows him as William but other numerous court documents at Martin County show him as Joseph. Of real interest was a charge or complaint that followed him from Floyd County, Indiana questioning the use of an alias. Court hearing was constantly continued possibly because of an illness. the last record of this was around 22 Jan 1830 for a continuance till 14 or 15 Feb 1830 and there is nothing further. Suspicion is that he died during this period.

He and Elizabeth did have one male child named James Vanhoy Dobson born abt 1827 and when he came of age he change his middle name to William. there are records of him buying land from his Mother and her second husband Joseph Hays who was also his court appointed guardian.

Elizabeth (Vanhoy) Dobson married Joseph Hays on Aug 3, 1830 according to State Records.

I have been wanting to get up to Martin County to Love Cemetery and check the Vanhoy Plot to see if there are a couple headstone that may be covered over but with as warm as it has been here in SW Indiana it has really brought out the snakes especially rattlers and a lot of wingless Wasp (commonly called "Cow Killers"). So, I guess I will wait till after the first hard freeze, if we get one.

    Sincerely:
    Paul VanHoy Sr.

    Vanhoy are to be deleted.
    1. Ada Vanhoy supposedly born 1815-1820 she never existed.
    2. James Vanhoy Jr., born 1829 but was not. He is in fact the son of Charles
    B. Vanhoy and Rebecca Greenwell b. 1814 (This date is an error. See the next email message Below DWM) and died late 1870 after the Census
of Consumption. He is buried at Love Methodist Cemetery in Martin County,IN.
and his headstone is marked "J.V." only.

Everybody has been checked and accounted for by either Family records
supplied to me or Courthouse Documents or a combination of both and or from
    cemetery records and church records.

The following individuals are to be credited with their assistance in the
research of this family for without them the truth would never have been known.

Wade & Betty Hicks descendant of William Clayton Vanhoy
Bill Mitchell descendant of Addie VanHoy & Lincoln Walton. This Addie VanHoy
was the d/o Charles B. VanHoy and Rebecca Greenwell.

No what I found out was that was that James David Vanhoy was actually born
1854 and died sometime after the Census of 1870 and most probably right about
    1870.
He was buried at Love Cemetery behind his Grandfather.

Now next to James Hamilton Vanhoy's grave are two other plots which I intend
to investigate. They may be empty plots or the tombstones may well have been
knocked over years ago and be just below the surface. Won't be able to do so
until next spring when the ground has dried out some to get to the Cemetery.
The Month of Oct and NOV produced well over 14" of rain for SW Indiana this
year. Thank God it wasn't snow.

    Hope that has everything clarified.

    David,

Family record has Jonathan's birth as 9/04/1838 in NC, he had a twin brother named David. His father is Madison Monroe Jackson. His mother, is said (in my family records) to be Eunice Worthington, but I do not believe this to be the case....still searching. I believe the marriage of Madison Monroe and Eunice was too late for her to be the mother of the twins. Madison, his wife Eunice and children moved to MO from NC sometime between 1840 and 1850. I have found land patent records for Madison in the early 1840's in MO, and for some Worthington family members as well in the same county.

Jonathan's second wife was Rachel Minerva Gutridge (b. 2/5/1852) . She was married once before Jonathan to a Josephus Wesley Stapleton. I have 3/11/1877 as the date of that marriage (Bates Co. MO) .....and incidently I have 1/26/1861 as the date of marriage of he and his first wife (but never had the name). These are not all "documented", some information just came from some written notes by Fred Jackson who was the grandson of Jonathan, and the brother of my great-grandfather. Fred wrote that Jonathan's first marriage was in Henry Co.MO, but I haven't found the record.

Jonathan lived untill 1929. Rachel lived untill 1943. It was known in my family that they moved to Idaho, but I was not sure where they were buried, but I recently found the burial records on ancestry.com.

NAME OF DECEASED: JACKSON, JONATHAN YEAR: 1929CERTIFICATE NUMBER: 068467 COUNTY OF DEATH: Twin Falls CITY: BUHL DATE OFDEATH: 11/15/1929 DATE OF BIRTH: 09/04/1838.

Later (after Jonathan's death) there had been a write up about Rachel in a local Idaho newspaper when she was very old.....I believe it pictured her with her loom.

Let me know if there might be other information of interest to you.
