Grandma Louisa's Mother died in childbirth in March 1861. Mama always said she was an orphan raised by her Uncle Billy Payne and wife Sarah Stoneman. She was called "Sissy Payne". In 1870 census, she was in the home of William and Sarah Payne, listed as age 8. Her father Mordecai MCCraw enlisted in Co. E, 29th Va. in August 6, 1861 about 6 months after Grandma Louisa was born. He died in Lynchburg, Va. hospital from fever June 4, 1863. Therefore she never knew her parents. She passed away on January 15, 1926 a year before I was born and I regret never getting to know her...

Ada was married Twice. Her first husband was George A. Peters, son of John J. and Sarah Jane Peters. Her second husband was J.Moir Goad son of James and Susan Goad. Aunt Ada is buried at God's Little Acre in the Moravian Church Cemetery located in Mt. Airy, Surry County, N.C.

Mickey or to me My Aunt Mae died during flu epidemic on Jan. 16, 1919. She left 5 children that were raised mostly by their paternal grandparents. She has one daughter Naomi that was named after my dear mother and I was fortunate to get to see Naomi and her husband Frank McMillan and occasionally Ethel as they even after they grew up and married would visit us. It is so good to see Naomi, Elmer and Ethel at our Hawks Reunion.

Aunt Nina was always very special to me when I was a child. She was an excellent seamstress and told me she just loved to make me little dresses
as they always looked so pretty on me. She practically raised Victor Goad-her sister Lera's son and also her brother Homers son Ellis Martin "Bill" Hawks
after Uncle Homer's first wife, Sallie Martin Hawks died.

Aunt Lera moved to Winston Salem to live with her daughter Pauline in the
late forties and early fifties. She died at Baptist Hospital September 08, 1954. She is buried at Old Hollow Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery where most of her family are buried.

Aunt Connie is buried at Old Hollow Primitive Baptist Cemetery located in Mt. Airy, Surry County, N.C. Uncle Dallas took the two girls to his parents and we didn't see them again for many years. They married and lived in Martinsville, Va. the last time we were in touch.

Tuberculosis was very prevalent even in the early 1900's. Aunt Opal was ill
for many years before she passed away. I can remember vaguely my Mother
taking care of her and taking me with her. Her daughter Celia Faye and I were
the same age, approximately 4 years old, and she and I would play together.
My mother really grieved over the death of her sister and her two little girls. Times were so hard and "The Great Depression" made it impossible to locate them. I talk by telephone to Irene occasionally and she tells me how hard it was on her and Celia to be taken away from the people they loved after their mother died.

Uncle Homer retired from the Mt. Airy Fire Dept. He then began restoring
old grandfather clocks. He traveled all around looking for these clocks. He would bring them home and completely restore them. My parents moved to High Point, N. C. in February 1944, which was the year I graduated from Mt. Airy High School. I wanted to stay in Mt. Airy and graduate with the friends I
had gone to school with for 12 years. It pleased me to no end when Uncle
Homer and Aunt Viola volunteered to let me stay with them the remaining months until I graduated. Aunt Viola was so good to me and I have so warm memories of her.

Uncle Homer was really the first person to talk to me about my ancestors and my heritage. Many times he would take me to Lambsburg, up Pipers Gap and show me what was left standing of Grandpa Jeff and Grandma Louisa's cabin on the curve-now called Pose Bobbits curve.

Many times he would take me to Mt. Carroll Methodist Church where my
Great-Grandfather Nathaniel and Great-grandmother Nancy Hanks Hawks were buried. We also visited Chestnut Grove Cemetery where many of our ancestors were buried. Something inside me kept wanting to know more and more. If not for responsibilities that had to be made primary, I think most of my waking hours would have been spent researching my history.


I was not aware of it, but my dear Mother was writing much about her life in Carroll County, recording her memories, and began to talk about it to me every opportunity we had. I am so grateful I had someone to really awaken in me what a great heritage I have.
