!It is my contention, Corbet Cochran Jr, that Jemima, wife of William remarried Elder Humphrey Cockerham after the death of William. I have no documentation to prove this contention, but the area in which these individuals lived (VA) and the customs of the time and the unusuallness of the names involved lead me to suspect this as being fact. It is certian they knew each other.

From Corbett Cockerham
!NOTES FROM FRANK E. COCKERHAM: To the south of James Cockerham's {property} was Martin Cockerham who made entry 3535 for 50 acres on 10 March 1829; see the tract labelled "Martin 1". It should be noted that the southeast corner of that tract was "a pine in Humphrey Cockerham's old line." Since Martin was on the 1829 tax list for 100 acres, he obviously owned another 50 acres that were not in the deed books. In 1849 Martin made another land entry to describe his holdings adjacent to James Cockerham and the Nathaniel Barker tract, and the resulting NC grant 5487 is shown as "Martin 2" in figure 2. The tract labelled "M3" was a later acquisition by Martin. Martin combined tracts "Martin2" and "M3" in a deed to his son James Cockerham in 1855 ( Deed Book S-473).

NOTES FROM A LETTER FROM FRANK E. COCKERHAM 10/15/97
I have since learned from a reader of the articles that decendants of Abel Sparks and Sarah "Cockran" believe that Sarah's father was Humphrey Cockran or Cockerham of Wilkes County because Abel Sparks was living on contiguous property to Humphrey on 25 Jan, 1800 ( Deed book GH pg.26); and on 12 Dec 1801 a deed from Humphrey to Abel Sparks was made for 150 acres for 100 pounds (Deed Book F1 p. 183)...
Notes from Dorothy L. Creely in a e-mail Nov. 1 1997:
My ancestor, Sarah Cockerham, born abt.1780 in Wilkes Co. NC probably married Abel Sparks in Wilkes Co. abt. 1800. They moved about 1807 to Franklin Co. TN, then to Bond Co. Illinois about 1820, finally settling in Grant Co. Wisconsin about 1832. I have the feeling she is the daughter of Daniel Cockerham Jr. She is a cousin of Francis Cockerham Hurt. (maybe).... My notes on Abel Sparks is quite complete.

Ed Bates to MDV 1991: Marriage bond signed by William Talby and David Cockerham.
Rose Taulbee: "Nancy died August 14, 1837 of what was called "Miasma", this was a disease caused from breathing a deadly gas that came up out of the marshes at night. Hundreds of settlers died of it in this area of IL. Their son Martin Cockerham died a year after his mother, age 19. William, Nancy and Martin are buried on a bluff on the left side of Big Ramsey Creek, near Boaz Bridge, nine miles north of Vandalia on the old Shelbyville Road. We have found this place but not the graves, some from Kentucky came in 1929 and found the site but subsequent owners destroyed the graveyard."
MDV: "Uncle Breck's (William Breckenridge Taulbee) grandson found the graves in 1929."
(MAC: I should note that almost all of Rose's correct information on this line of the Taulbees came from MDV)
June Hurst said "Nancy was born in Rowan County. Her mother went there to have her baby." June Hurst was the wife of Ceasar Hurst who, with June, was a diligent researcher and wrote a book about the Hursts. June also was a descendent of Daniel Duff. When she became infirm (about 1993), she "gave her records" to her nephew.

6. | John COCKRAHAM (1.1) was born about 1793 in Wilkes County, North Carolina; died in 1821/1829 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Notes:
THE FOLLOWING NOTES SUPPLIED BY FRANK E. COCKERHAM
John Cockerham made an entry 1289 in 1814 for 150 acres beginning at the head of Bunkers Hill Branch. However, the entry must have been unsuccessful, because William Parsons made entry 1877 for land identically described in 1818 and recieved a grant, as mentioned above.
John Cockerham's other entry 1688 was described as beginning "in his fathers line running east with Samuel Parsons line...north with Gyns line...west with Hunts line..." see fig 1.
John (with his brother David) Cockerham were privates in the Company of James Mastin in a muster list of 8 July, 1812 (WGS 11-3-14). John married Fannie Wades on 3 Oct. 1814 with William Persons bondsman (Holcomb). In the 1820 Census, John was in the 26-45 age group, {Fannie} was 16-26, and two daughters and one son were all less than 10 years. Although John Cockerham's entry 1688 was for 90 acres, the tax list of 1823 indicated only 60 acres. In the tax list of 1829, John Cockerham did not appear; apparently already deceased. John was born before 1794; probably by 1793 since he was making land entries in 1814.
In Feb 1830, Court of Wilkes County, "Daniel Cockerham, age 8 years Jan 1830, and David Cockerham age 6 yrs June 1830, children of John Cockerham deceased, bound to Daniel Willcoxson" (WGS 18-1-18). In the 1830 census, Fanny Cockerham was listed with one daughter of 5-10 and one son less than 5 years. The total children appears to be 4 sons and 3 daughters, but Fanny and her orphaned children could not be found in later records.
THE FOLLOWING NOTES SUPPLIED BY INA STOTT
This marriage was documented by a marriage bond in Garrard County, KY. It is on file at the Lancaster courthouse. additionally referenced by the "Kentucky Pioneers" and court records.
John married Fannie WADES on 3 Oct 1814. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

7. | William (Owsley) COCKERHAM (1.1) was born in 1794. Notes:
From Corbett Cockerham
THE FOLLOWING NOTES SUPPLIED BY FRANK E. COCKERHAM:
Two days after John Cockerham made an unsuccessful claim in entry 1289, William Cockerham made an unsuccessful claim in entry 1290 in the very same area in which John would later recieve his grant; see fig.1. I believe this William to be the son of { Elder} Humphrey. William Cockerham did not appear in the census of 1820 presumably because he was in the household of his father Humphrey. William briefly owned land on the Roaring River; 100 acres purchased 21 September 1816 (24-177) and sold 1 November 1917. (24-220). Both deeds were witnessed by William Taulbee, a person with whom William Cockerham was often associated.
William and Elisabeth "Cockrum" of Owsley [Co. KY] household 192 were ages 56 and 54 respectively in the 1850 census. Their Oldest Child was James, born 1822 in NC, who married Emily Stamper. The year of birth of their first child James, is consistent with the hypothesis that this William and Elisabeth were the participants in the Wilkes County marriage of 29 march 1821 of William Cockerham and Elisabeth Hill with Samuel Parsons as bondsman (Holcomb). Note that Sameul Parsons was the adjoining neighbor to John Cockerham on fig. 1.
William Cockerham died before the 1860 census, survived by his widow Elisabeth and living with Martin in the 1860 census, probably on their farm which became part of Breathitt County by 1860. Their sons were James, Humphrey, William M., Martin, John Miles, Elijah and Daniel Duff, according to Mary DeBusk Voth. All these sons appear in either James household 191 or William's household 192 in the 1850 census except Humphrey.
In the Wilkes County tax lists, William Cockerham was taxed as a poll, but without acreage.

9. | Susanna COCKERHAM (1.1) was born about 1800. Notes:
From Corbett Cockerham
Humphrey Cockerham's neighbor on the west side in the 1820's was son-in-law John Thornton, who died in 1827 and left Susannah with 686 acres according to the 1829 tax list. In the Febuary 1830 court, Susannah's administrative bond for the estate was renewed with Moses Cockerham as security in place of John Thornton. It does not appear that Humphrey gave any land to Susannah Cockerham Thornton, perhaps because she was relatively prosperous. The definition of the Thornton Tracts can be found in Deed Book M-537 through M-542, and Z-141 through 143. In the 1840 census, the household of Susannah Thornton listed a female aged 70-80 years who may have been her mother {or mother- in-law) the widow of Humphrey Cockerham. In the 1870 census, Susannah was aged 70.
After John Thornton's heirs divided his land, it became apparent that at least the northern half of William Parson's entry 1877 had become Thornton property, and on figure 2 it is labelled "Z-143", for it's deedbook/ page description. It was immediately west of Humphrey's tract at the head of Bunker Branch which is included in the tract labelled "Z-242". Deed Book Z shows that Meredith Barker was selling the tract to Meredith Thornton in 1862. Meredith Barker was a son of Millie Cockerham Barker, but evidence has not been found that the property decended from Humphrey to Millie to Meredith Barker.
Susanna married John THORNTON on 11 Oct 1819 in Wilks Co Nc, Big Branch of Big Bugaboo. John was born about 1800. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

From Corbett Cockerh am
1771-1879 Index Surry Co. NC Deeds:
Hardin & wife to Hardin Copeland deed book 5p.415
NOTES FROM FRANK E. COCKERHAM:
A conjecture was made that "Henry" Cockerham who married Fanny Greenwell on 8 January 1831 (Nathaniel Barker bondsman) was the youngest son of Humphrey. The actual marriage bond shows that it was Hardin Cockerham who made application to marry Fanny Greenwell and that bond was given by Harden Cockerham and Nathaniel Barker. In the place that the clerk wrote the bondsman's names for them to sign their mark, he mistakenly wrote Henry instead of Harden.
Harden Cockerham appeared in the 1834 Tax Lists of Wilkes County in John Holloway's list, along with presumed brothers Martin, Moses and James. No Wilkes county Cockerhams were listed outside of this tax district. Harden Cockerham was listed for 100 acres valued at $50, and was taxed for no white or black polls. One might conjecture that he only became 21 late in the year and hence married under age in 1831, or perhaps his heath was so poor that he was excused from the poll tax. The 1837 Tax List of Wilks County, made out in May 1838, did not list Harden Cockerham.
In 1839, Harden Cockerham was located in Floyd County Kentucky; one male over 21 years.
Hardin married Frances (Fanny) GREENWELL on 8 Jan 1831 in Wilkes County n.C.. Frances was born in 1805 in Yadkin County, North Carolina; died in 1864 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Clearly, at this point, William and Martin were living with a uncle to help manage the larger portion of their fathers farm. William Cockerham does not appear on the 1860 census. He may have had failing health at this time, and asked a brother to help with a harvest, or planting at this time. This was probably James Buck Cockerham. Martin Cockerham was the father of James Buck, and probably Martin's godfather. Additionally, this census indicates that everyone was born in NC. At this point, I am going to establish James's age and fill in his sheet untill I get better information. 11/6/97.

1860 Census Breathitt Co. KY, NA roll #357 p.6 35/35
It appears to me, according to the 1840 Census of William Cockerham of Owsley Co. KY, that there was an unidentified female born between 1825 and 1830. The Elisabeth in the above enumeration fits the profile. Since this unidentified female is the only female in that family group, it is not unlikely that this female would be named after her mother. In keeping with that all her children were born in Owsley Co. KY and a marriage from the Cockerham family from Mary Polly Cockerham to a Thomas A. Fulks, it is not hard to imagine that marriage produced a son, Thomas. Therefore, as of this date, untill I get further contradicting information, I am going to consider these to be the facts, a marriage between first cousins. Corbet Cochran Jr. 11/5/97.

NOTES FROM FRANK E. COCKERHAM:
The 1860 census of Linn County MO indicates that E.W. Cokerham, age 28, had been born in North Carolina and that his oldest child had been born in Missouri three years before. Elias Wilson Cokerham used this spelling of his surname throughout his long life in Linn County, MO.

123. | Sarah Etta TAULBEE (36.John3, 4.Nancy2, 1.1) was born in 1865; died in 1907. Notes:
!There may be some confusion on the birth and death date. Corbet Cochran Sr. puts the date of birth in 1875 and the death in 1907 and Marcus Allen puts the date of death on April 22 1897. Also there may be a discrepancy about the marriage. Corbet Cocran Sr put the marriage in 1898 as well as Edna Richardson.
!Donald R. Cochran states that Sarah Taulbee was stabbed to death by Floyd Allen over a family arguement. Apparently Floyd Allen went to jail for a number of years. He further stated that Sarah was pretty mean to the children. It is also rumored that Sarah was Cherokee Indian.
!Buried on the Allen Homestead.

Family/Spouse: Elisabeth COCKERHAM. Elisabeth (daughter of William (Owsley) COCKERHAM and Elizabeth HILL) was born in 1830 in Owsley County, Kentucky. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
