      JONESVILLE - Mrs. Helen Louise Atkins Shaffner, 62, of Shaffner Road passed away Monday, June 4, 2001, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital.

      She was born March 19, 1939, in Surry County to the late William Webster and Lela Mae Badgett Atkins.

      Mrs. Shaffner was a homemaker and volunteered for years with the Old Hickory Council Cub Scouts and the Volunteer Reading Program at Jonesville Elementary School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jonesville where she served as a former Sunday school teacher for the 4- and 5-year-olds.

      She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Etta Atkins Bledsoe, Nellie Ruth Atkins Hayes and Willie Elizabeth Atkins Shaffner; a brother, Glenn Lee Atkins; and a nephew, Henry Rufus Shaffner Jr. Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Dewitt Clarence Shaffner of the home; her son Barry Dewitt Shaffner, of the home; three sisters, Metta "Polly" Atkins Bledsoe, Dottie Atkins Hollander and Nancy Atkins Cantrell; three special nieces and other nieces and nephews.

      Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Jonesville by Dr. Ray Hamilton and the Rev. Bill Byrd. Burial will follow in Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Little Mountain Road, Jonesville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Jonesville, Jonesville, NC 28642.
