    • Jack is the person who showed me where Martin Marshall's grave is located. That was sometime during the mid 1990s. (DWM)

Some days are harder than others, being away from your hometown. I grew up surrounded by my history and though I was an only child, there were cousins in every other house up and down Highway 311 from Walkertown to Walnut Cove. My mom used to drive me crazy pointing out every single one every time we would drive somewhere. What I would give to hear her memories, and those of my aunts and uncles, one more time! Like all the family before me, Gary and I commuted to our jobs and in every other moment, it seemed, we worked to keep our home place going. We never seemed to master the art of balancing all the responsibilities and giving ourselves time for the social events of the community (which now, I deeply regret). We didn?t get to visit much?..but I knew they were there?.and I now know how comforting that was! I miss those encounters in the shops, at church events, etc. One cousin was especially dear to me and kept reappearing in my life over the years. He was my mother?s generation, the heir of a home built by the grandson of our farm?s founder about two miles away and he was fiercely dedicated to preserving our family history. In the early 80s, my husband came home one day and said, ?Do you know a guy named Roy Marshall? He?s transferred in from Shreveport and he?s my new boss. He says you might know him.? Took me a while to figure it out because my family had always referred to him as Cousin ?Jackie?. For a long time, I just called him Roy Jack. From that point forward, over the years our lives would touch again and again. Each time, I felt blessed. His beautiful wife turned out to be one of my mother?s closest childhood friends and also connected to her family through a variety of local ties. I have always regarded both Jack and Joanne as kindred spirits and came to love them dearly. Their contributions to the Dennis & Salem Chapel Township folks are far too numerous to mention! We lost Roy Jack last Friday. I know there was a grand reception for him in heaven, including some of my immediate family, but his children, grandchildren and wife are hurting. And I can?t stop thinking about them?him! Some people just take up residence in your heart. There is a deep void in my heart this week and I need to make a trip back home!

Hi David, since Jack's children are on my page didn't want to say anything to upset. Jack & Joanne were in a terrible car crash in June. It broke his neck. He recovered from that & came home, but complications, infection took him. Joanne is still in a body cast. Jack was at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center when he passed on 11/10. Linda
