Notes |
- !From Dr. James Andrew Harrell, Sr.
I was at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina at a retreat May 22 - 25, 2003. Our group was in the Lambuth Inn and I noticed a painting in the lobby. There were two bronze plaques attached to the bottom of the painting. On the 23rd I read the information on the plaques and discovered that Mattie had reproduced the painting. Until then I did not even know that she was an artist. The wording on the plaques was as follows:
Plaque at the bottom middle:
"Peace on Earth"
Given to the Lake Junaluska Assembly June 1987
In honor of
Bishop L. Bevel Jones, III
For his exceptional leadership in the Western North Carolina Conference
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall
Be called the children of God.
Given by the family of
Dr. and Mrs. Roy B. Harrell
Artist: Mattie Reid Doughton Harrell
Plaque at the bottom right:
A reproduction of Plockhorst's
Painting "Tidings of Great Joy"
By Mattie Reid Doughton Harrell
