This is so exciting to connect with my first distant cousin through my genealogy research. I am keeping my fingers crossed your info can help provide proof for the DAR, and I am most happy to share what I know about my closer relatives in relation to the Spargers/Spargurs.

My maiden name is Allison Hope Smith, married name Parrott. My parents are Judith Carolyn Goad and Joseph Vaden Smith, both originally from Surry County, N.C. My father, who goes by Joe V. Smith, is the son of Howard Albert Smith and Verda Elizabeth Vaden. Albert, my grandfather, was the son of Joseph Smith and Laura Jane Perkins. Laura Jane was the daughter of Margaret Jane Sparger and Leonadus/Leonzo/Leander Smith (there seems to be several variations of his first name in public documents, but he seemed to go by Lee). Margaret Jane was his first wife, and she was the daughter of William W. Sparger, son of John W. Sparger. William had numerous brothers and sisters, one of whom was Murlin Sparger. Murlin's descendants are linked in the DAR. William appears to have died at a relatively early age, and the story I found is that he was murdered by robbers while running a wagon transport between Surry County and Fayetteville. There is a date of 1836 as an estimated death, but Margaret Jane was born in 1839, so I suspect that wherever that date is from it may be incorrect. Margaret Jane also was living with the Murlin Sparger family in one census.

The Perkins family Margaret Jane married into appears to have had many Quakers. I know much more about the Smiths. There is a Smith family cemetery in Surry County on the outskirts of Mt. Airy, and family members had small houses all in that area. Many of those older relatives were living when I was a kid, and their properties are now owned by other non-family members (which must seem a little weird considering that cemetery is in their backyards). But the largest portion of the property which is undeveloped is now owned by my dad. The little four room house he grew up in is still there, too, where my grandmother lived by herself for many years after my grandfather died. And she just died last year at the age of 101.

Going back to the Spargers, my father was surpised when I told him about John W. 's wife, Christina Frey. I am sure you know that Christina came out of the Moravian community and my dad was unaware he had that lineage in his tree. There are many Moravians on my mom's side. What was even more exciting for me was to find that Christina's mother is buried in the cemetery at Old Salem in Winston-Salem. I had been to Old Salem many times and it was thrilling to realize I had a family connection there. My mom and I (she lives about 10 minutes from Winston) have visited the gravesite. Her Moravian ancestors are mostly buried in Bethania, and I am hoping to get back up to NC soon to visit there, but also the Salem Methodist cemetery where so many of the Spargers are buried.

A little about myself: I live in Dalton, Ga. with my husband. I have two sons, one married and living in Chicago, the other currently in Orlando doing an internship. I have four siblings: one full sister, Jennifer Vaden Smith, married with one son and living in California. My parents are divorced, and my dad remarried and had two more children: my half-sister Laure Elizabeth Smith DeDominco, who passed away last year from breast cancer, and Dr. Joseph Andrew (Andy) Smith, married with two kids in Wilmington, NC.

I've kind of jumped all over the place here, but it's such a huge topic to cover. I would love to know more about the Spargers as well, although I did find one extensive website under the original German name. Bitsy sent off to Raleigh requesting a copy of the marriage bond for Margaret Jane Sparger and Lee Perkins, because they often listed the parents, so we are hoping to have that link soon.

Marshall 0001 - This is the third of four John W. Spargers. He was actually born John Wolfenbarger but changed his name when he moved to Ohio. I have considerable documentation on this interesting and complicated family. He was buried in the old Quaker cemetery in Springtown, Ohio. His son, Reuben is buried with him.
