SHELTON WINSTON-SALEM - Walter Roland Shelton of Winston-Salem, NC; born Au gust 30, 1920, Walter went home to be with the Lord, on Tuesday, March 1, 2011. Beloved husband of Rachel W. Shelton, beloved father of David, Philip and Charles Shelton of Winston-Salem. We invite you to Celebrate his Life on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 1 p.m. Services will be held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Respects may be made one and one half hours before services. Burial will be held at Parklawn Memorial Park following the service. Walter's life was all about Love: he met Rachel when he was seventeen, she was fifteen, and it was love at first sight. Married in their early twenties, they embraced life as the years brought forth three children and many grand and great grandchildren. Walter served aboard the aircraft carrier "The Bennington" in the South Pacific during World War II. With three tours of duty, he is truly one of the last of the "Greatest Generation". Walter entered Wake Forest University in 1958 at the age of thirty eight, working full time and with the support of Rachel, he graduated eleven years later in 1969 with a degree in Business Administration. Throughout the years, Walter attended Salem Baptist Church. He taught Intermediate Boy's Sunday School for thirty years. He aspired to be a Deacon, then Head Deacon, and then that wonderful man with the firm grip there to shake your hand and send God's Grace with you as you left the Church. Walter's masonic life was also a dedication. He was Past Master of the Blue Lodge, Past Master of the Scottish Rite, and Past Master of the Shrine. He held the distinction of the Thirty-three Degree. Memorials may be made to the Shrine Children's Hospital or to any Hospice you may choose. Walter has touched so many lives and we all will miss him. The joy of knowing that he plays his harmonica in Heaven's Orchestra will comfort us all. When all is still and the hour is late, we can still hear "The Old Rugged Cross" ..
