Hi David,

I'm hoping you can point me in the right direction for some information. I'm looking for info on John Marshall, one of my ancestors. He was born in Montgomery county, VA on 11-16-1813 and died in Carroll county, VA in 1896. His wife was Permelia Arter. I'm trying to find any further information such as military history or personal family information like where they lived and such. My entire Marshall family came from VA. and they are many!

I began this project for my Grandmother a few years ago. We just buried her in January and I would love to be able to take this as far as possible. Any information you can give me would be wonderful and much appreciated. I have a good bit already but can always use more.

It is unknown whether Robert was born in England or Maryland.




The family story is that Bobby came to the US from England. He was playing and pulled a chair out from under a woman. She died. He was indentured to a blacksmith in Maryland after the incident, arriving at the US in Philadelphia. In Maryland, he chose not to stay with the blacksmith for the seven-year indenture, but instead swam the Potomac River after four years and settled in Virginia. He was a blacksmith and a carpenter. Originally he went to Floyd County, Virginia, then Grayson/Carroll County.

After he came to the US, six more of Bobby?s brothers followed. Two of them settled in New York. We don?t know what happened to the others.
The old Marshall Homestead is at Laurel Fork, VA. (The post office is Hillsville, Virginia)

Robert married Susannah DODD on 1 Jan 1801 in , Franklin County, Virginia. Susannah (daughter of Elijah DODD and Sally POTEET) was born on 17 Sep 1775 in Franklin County, Virginia; died on 5 Jan 1859 in Carroll County, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
