My Marshall relatives lived in Forsyth Co. NC. Susanna Marshall, daughter of Thomas Riley Marshall was my gr-gr grandmother. One of her sons was Joseph Edward Crews. He married Mary Ann McMillan (or McMillian).

I would love to find out where the parents of Mary Ann ended up. Their names were William and Minerva Smith McMillan. I believe they may have gone to Missouri or Illinois in the mid 1800's---like so many other relatives did. Mary Ann had a sister named Paulina----and brothers John, Frederick, and Robert.

Since we are all "connected" somehow-----would anyone know anything about these people.

    Thanks,

    Barbara Crews Burt

!Marshall 0003, Pg. 2; Marshall 0021 - One source says that he was born in
Stokes County, North Carolina and the other says he was probably born in
Maryland. He is buried in the Marshall family cemetary near Walkertown, North Carolina in Forsyth County. Tandy Marshall donated the land for a cemetery and a Baptist church was later established there. The church was named the Marshall Baptist Church.
!Marshall 0022 - This source says he died on Feb. 14.
!Marshall 0073, p.1 - This source is from Phillis Ann (Roberson) Hoots. She
verified the dates on his gravestone. There are several reputable sources that report his birth/death dates incorrectly. Phillis also is the best source for their marriage date.

Noah was a son of Thomas Marshall, who was a son of Martin Marshall of NC.
Thomas signed notes for Noah to buy and operate Salem Wagon Factory. Noah lost his shirt (or embezzled money: not clear), leaving his father bankrupt. According to family oral tradition, Noah hightailed it out of town, but his brothers, William B. and Tandy, caught up with him. They couldn't get him to return.

When Thomas R. Marshall of Indiana became Woodrow Wilson's VP, William's daughter, Lucy Marshall, wrote, asking him if he were descended from Noah. He replied saying he was. After leaving office, the VP wrote a biographical article asserting descent from Chief Justice John Marshall of VA, but gave no descent line.

I can't find a Noah Marshall in Indiana on the 1850 or 1860 Census. On the latter, I do find a Thomas Marshall, born in NC. Did Noah adopt his father's name???

    All replies welcomed!

    Odessa Elliott
