She used Irene as an adult. Her father called her Kizzie. She was a gentle, God fearing woman, but very strong in character. She saved four leaf clovers and was never bitten by a bug or stung by a bee, even living most of her young life on a farm in Kansas. I called her Dappy as a little girl because I couldn't say Grammie. As we grew older my sister Carol and I called her Grammie.

The following is a rough draft of a letter written by Mary Marshall Hamilton,to Lynne Newhall Barclay. The date on the draft is Aug. 1982.
We went to the Sloop reunion last weekend, and I made some discoveries that will interest you. We took the legal description of the farm to the courthouse at Oakley, and they had no trouble finding it. It is the farm that we were living on when Howard was born! So that explains why my mother and father moved to Oakley. Grandmother Marshall was there when Howard was born. Oh how I wish I had asked Mother.
At the reunion were half a dozen people who remembered Mother. We had such a good time at the reunion picnic. I met a Ruth Keyes Clark (grand-daughter of John and Rosa Sloop) Ruth is into family history and in the Kansas Historical Society. She has been cataloging the cemeteries around Nortonville, Winchester, etc. She discovered that there were six Sloops buried in Nortonville Cemetery who were not in the mortuary record. I gave her Grandfather Marshall's name and date of death and she is going to try to find out where he is buried. She is the one who sent yu Homer's biography, Ascenith said you are to keep it. Cora Coppinger Charles daughter Mary Charlene lives in Berkeley.
Max and Lou Osing visited us in July. We enjoyed them so much. Enclosed is the will copy.
Sharon(Marshall) wrote me a lovely note about the first of July. That is all I have heard from Seattle since we left there. Bill( Marshall)said he would send me the tape of Howard's Memorial.
( I also asked Wilma (Moon) Sloop you corresponded with-Valley Falls I think. She is divorced from Le Roy Sloop)this sentence is not too clear.
I suppose Carol is nearly settled by now. I hope the move was uneventful! I haven't heard from her and do not have address. Laguna Niguel (is) about 10 mi. from Steve's. See you and Don even briefly in Seattle.
ON THE BACK OF THE PAPER-obviously a different letter to someone else.
Our trip home was uneventful as we had done our sightseeing on the way out. We stayed in Goodland and were home around 1 Tuesday.
We surely do thank you for a wonderful weekend. Everything about it was so pleasand-the trip to Nortonville, the picnic-even the weather was super. We enjoyed seeing Susan and Preben. (this is Ascenith and Keith Lewis's daughter and grandchild so maybe the letter was to Ascenith)
I just finished writing Lynne about the reunion and Ruth Clark.
I just discovered that Grandfather Marshall owned "Lot 15 Main Street in Williams addition to Nortonville". Cousin Maxine gave me a copy of his will, and I had forgotten that was in it. I'm so cross at me for not having that info with me!
Thanks again for all you did for us. We hope we didn't wear you out.
We'll look forward to seeing you Christmas time.
Talked to Bon yesterday, she told me you are coming in Sept. We made a date for the 18th. (This may have been written to Ellen, Bonnie Hamilton's sister or to her mother. Just a guess)

Elias married Lucinda Delphine WHITE on 5 Jan 1876 in Tippenville, Denison County, Kansas. Lucinda was born on 19 Aug 1855 in Missouri; died on 12 Oct 1929 in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    DEATH RECORDS
Obituary from WINCHESTER STAR dated 14 Feburary 1896
Thomas W. Marshall was born in Surrey County, North Carolina, November 27, 1823 and died of pneumonia at his residence three miles north of Winchester, Kansas, February 4th 1896, aged 73 years, 3 months and 8 days.
When he was seventeen years old he moved to Missori and later in 1857 or '58, he came to Kansas settling upon the place where he died.
His death was very sudden and unexpected. On Monday of the week preceding his death he went to Leavenworth to meet his wife Orilla, who had been called there by the death of her brother. Wednesday they returned and Thursday he went to Nortonville. He complained on his return of feeling somewhat indisposed but did not give up altogether until the very last. On the day preceding his death he was out of doors a short while. Aabout 10 o'clock Tuesday morning he breathed his last. Suddenly as death came it found him ready. He was conscious and expressed himself as having hope that all was well.
Brother Marshall was well and favorably known having been for nearly forty years a resident of Jefferson County, and in that time establishing a reputation for integrity of character.
He was united with the Baptist church but recently became a member of the Christian Church of Winchester, from which church he was buried February 6th.
    "His Works do follow him."
