    David,

I just started on researching our family tree. I have 600 names entered so
far in the program Family Tree Maker. I obtained most of my information
    from my uncle, Norman Nale.

On my grandfather's side of the family, I have information on the Nale
family back to Germany around 1720 and the Denny family back to 1786. (I
found further information on our Denny family on the internet back to
Ireland around 1763. I understand that information found on the internet is
a starting point for finding the actual records.)

On my grandmother's side, Marshall's you know and the Overton family back to
1797. (I found our Overton family back to England about 1547 in the LDS
    Ancestral File.)

I don't know how to send gedcoms or data bases or whatever people send.

The easiest way for me is to cut and paste and send my notes.

    Hi David,
I have a question, where did the death date (Feb. 1862) of Joseph M. Marshall ( born 1810) come from? I received info yesterday that states he died 10-28-1861. I went to a list of burials in Jefferson Barracks and there is a J.M. Marshall buried there with the same death date. I will be glad to email you a copy of the info if you are interested. Please let me know. Joyce

    David,
Here is the copies that I got yesterday. They look pretty official to me. Let me know what you think, please. Also found this on the list of Jefferson Barracks Cemetery list. Waiting to hear from you..........Joyce

    Notes:

!Marshall 0003, Pg. 2; Marshall 0021 - One source says that he was born in
Stokes County, North Carolina and the other says he was probably born in
Maryland. He is buried in the Marshall family cemetary near Walkertown, North Carolina in Forsyth County. Tandy Marshall donated the land for a cemetery and a Baptist church was later established there. The church was named the Marshall Baptist Church.
!Marshall 0022 - This source says he died on Feb. 14.
!Marshall 0073, p.1 - This source is from Phillis Ann (Roberson) Hoots. She
verified the dates on his gravestone. There are several reputable sources that report his birth/death dates incorrectly. Phillis also is the best source for their marriage date.

Noah was a son of Thomas Marshall, who was a son of Martin Marshall of NC.
Thomas signed notes for Noah to buy and operate Salem Wagon Factory. Noah lost his shirt (or embezzled money: not clear), leaving his father bankrupt. According to family oral tradition, Noah hightailed it out of town, but his brothers, William B. and Tandy, caught up with him. They couldn't get him to return.

When Thomas R. Marshall of Indiana became Woodrow Wilson's VP, William's daughter, Lucy Marshall, wrote, asking him if he were descended from Noah. He replied saying he was. After leaving office, the VP wrote a biographical article asserting descent from Chief Justice John Marshall of VA, but gave no descent line.

I can't find a Noah Marshall in Indiana on the 1850 or 1860 Census. On the latter, I do find a Thomas Marshall, born in NC. Did Noah adopt his father's name???

    All replies welcomed!

    Odessa Elliott

Marshall 0001; Marshall 0002; Marshall 0019, 0020, & 0021 - Martin was married twice. I have no information about his first wife, but they had two sons, William and James.
!Martin is buried in the family cemetery; go down "Dusty Trail" off Baux Mountain Road in Forsyth County, NC. I have visited his grave site. Some sources give Forsyth County as his place of death. But Forsyth County was not formed until 1849. Until then it was part of Stokes County. Marshall 0043, pg. 2 - Letter from Nancy Lynn (Marshall) Reu.

Marshall 0152, pg. 4 - This source gives his first wife's name as Susanna Basel. I can find no basis for this, but there are other Marshall's who think that might have been her name.

Marshall 0163, p. 1 - Letter from Michael Marshall. He speculates that Martins first wife might have been named Sarah Boswell. There are family stories that his first wife was Sarah Basil. Michael says that he has seen Boswell spelled several different ways similar to Basil. If that speculation eventually shows merit, that it is possible that Martin's first wife could have been Eleanor's (his second wife's) sister.

According to the documentation below Martin's first name was William. I have no other confirmation about this. (DWM)

David-This is just a rough guess. Rough is a key word. I have a paper from family that documents itself as; Hall of Records - Annapolis Md Liber#27 Folio #317, Va. Col. Martin Marshall, Will 1824 Stokes Co., Nc ,2nd wife Eleanor Boswell. Moved from Albermarle Co, Va to Stokes Co. in 1798. (Same year Richard Died)

Rootsweb - Phillip Hatcher W. Martin Marshall Marriage 1 Sarah Basal Marriage 2 Eleanor Boswell. Rootsweb Brenda Marshall Inman. Martin Wells Marshall 1790 in Va. 10 Nov, 1871 - Father Martin Marshall Married Eleanor Boswell.

Rootsweb - Billy Markland: Martin Wells Marshall, b. 1789 d.1871: 11/28/1814 Volunteered for service with Capt. John L. Houser's .Company of infantry, 5th Regiment of NC Milita. Rate of pay was 8.00/month. Discharged on 2/22/1815 at Norfolk, Va. --Source: Della Marshall Jones "The Marshalls of House and Barn Mountain". I think Martin Wells Martin maybe the son of William Martin Marshall who Married Eleanor Boswell. If I can figure out if W.M. Marshall and brother Richards dad was actually Richard Thomas Marshall I think I have this link licked. What do you think? MM

I don't know if I told you but I was able to get Martin Marshall approved as a patriot for NSDAR. His ancestor id is A216270.

He was listed in the Albemarle Co VA personal property tax list of 1783 this is considered acceptable service. A portion of the 1783 Virginia personal property tax and land tax went to support the war effort.
