    !Marshall 0074, p. 12 & 14 - Levi was on the rail gang laying track between
    Winston Salem and Roanoke in January, 1889. A gasket on a work locomotive
    broke and brought work to a halt. The president of the road, Col. Frances H.
    Fries half in jest turned to Levi and told him that if he could fix the gasket, he would make him the engineer of the run that would go over those tracks. Levi fixed the gasket and did become the engineer, a job he held until his retirement. (Norfolk and Western Magazine, September 15, 1976.
