    1. WILLIAM HILL5 SR. (SION4 HILL, SION W.3, ROBERT2, ROBERT1) was born 1710 in Caroline County, Virginia, and died February 1787 in Surry County, North Carolina. He married (1) ELIZABETH WILLIAMS Abt. 1718 in Virginia. He married (2) BRIDGET HEARN MULLINAX April 24, 1729 in Middlesex County, Virginia. He married (3) SUSANNA SMITHERS 1736 in King George County, Virginia. She was born 1716 in Caroline County, Va., and died Aft. 1786 in Surry County, North Carolina.

Notes for WILLIAM HILL SR.: JH. Records say, " William Hill m. a widow in (Middlesex Co.). She had a grown son...morning after marriage to (Hill) she brought her apron full of money and poured it into his lap, saying 'give my son 50L of that." (N.B.: any grown son would have to have been from a marriage ever prior to that to Mullinax, thus Bridget must have been several years older than William Hill). Hill researchers prior to Mr. Luck?s discovery had not noticed this marriage. It is not known when she died.

Other marriages of William Hill have been subject of diverse views. Worth S. Ray, Tn Cousins, remarked with documentation, " there is a tradition that the wife of William Hill was an Elizabeth Williams but it was later concluded that he married a Susannah Smithers, and the later version has been generally accepted by the Hill family, but it seems plain to me that he probably had as his first wife the Elizabeth Williams, by whom he had at least one son (or more), and after her decease married the Smithers, who was probably the father of most of her children."

A different view is seen by Carl K. Hill of Harriman, Tn who says (docum. unknown) that Williams first wife was Susannah Smithers, and after her death married Elizabeth Williams in 1750. Mrs Helen Leona Warwick (decd.), DAR #434304, says William was the first and only child of Sion Hill Jr. and his first wife Elizabeth Browne: Mrs. Warwick further claimed William Hill first married Mary Catlin and had William Catlin Hill, ?in some places referred to as William Jr."2nd wife Susannah Smithers, m 1736, prob. Caroline Co Va, the mother of William Hill (1737-1792) most often known as Rev. William Hill. (Views of C.K. Hill and Mrs. Warwick sent 2/82 by Jane Goldhamer).

The account by William's own son Joshua says, " William married in King George Co., Va. Susan Smither and settled in Caroline Co., where were born of said marriage 10sons and 1dau." Although it is unknown to this compiler when Elizabeth Williams was first suggested as William's 2nd wife, it may be that Daniel Brown Hill was the source of the original confusion.

Genealogical papers of Lottie Garner Hart in Tennessee State Library include the following (summarized but not quoted by Davis C. Hill). Dr. Hill of Mi in 86th year caused Mrs. Theresa Ewin Perkins in her DAR papers to list William Hill and Elizabeth Williams, and William Hickman and Mildred Smith as ancestors, in addition to other inaccuracies. "In his youth (DBH) had lived in Williamson Co., Tennessee and doubtless heard of his great aunts. Mildred Smith and Elizabeth Williams, daughters of William Hickman, and he made them (great grandmothers).

In any event, Susannah Smither's surname was preserved as part of the name of a son, Thomas Smither Hill, of a daughter of Joshua Hill, b.1799 and of a daughter of Dan Hill, b.1800. As both sons of William, Joshua and Dan, had been born some years after the date seen for his "second Marriage to Elizabeth Williams, usage of the Smither name for children born half a century later strongly implies that Susannah was mother of most of William's children, despite the gap between Elizabeth (b.1747) and Robert (b.1752). Williams will, made 1777, does not mention any wife, so presumably Susannah had died before this.

Prior to the Revelotionary War the Family moved to Surry Co., N.C. (Joshua's account says in 1772). William was a delegate from Surry Co. to the Provincial Congress which met at Hillsborough NC on 20 Aug.1775 to set up the first self-governing Commonwealth, independent of British authority, among the 13 American colonies. He was an Episcopalian. In 4/90 Davis C. Hill of Nashville Tn pointed out that some statements in the Joshua Hill Foster papers (JH Rec.) require revision of previous listing of William's Children: JH Rec. states William

    Notes for SUSANNA SMITHER:
Prior to the Revolutionary War the family moved to Surry Co., NC (Joshua's account says in 1772). William was a delegate from Surry Co., NC to the Provincial Congress which met at Hillsborough, N.C. on 20 Aug. 1775 to set up the first self-governing Commonwealth, independent of British authority, among the 13 American colonies. He was an Episcopalian.

The marriage to Susannah Smither probably took place about 1776: she was born ca. 1716, and is believed to have been a dau of Thomas Smithers and Susannah Singleton. The will of Robert Singleton of Gloucester Co., Va., dated 15 Apr. 1724, proved 25 Mar. 1725, names his wife Elizabeth, and among other children, a daughter "Susanna the wife of Thomas Smither".

Also, Thomas Smither was Susannah's father is inferred from the name of her second child. The times and places provide circumstantial possibility to support this assumption. May 7 1742 George & Mary [Singleton] Foster sold their 150ac to John Gregg; rec Prince Wm Va. 1751 Susanna [Singleton] Smither Caroline Co Va & John Smither [her son] sold her part of the land. Joshua left his 300ac to his sons, Robert & Stanley Singleton. Mary [Singleton] Foster was Susannah?s sister.
