    Mr Marshall,

Gladys Lewis was born 21-March-1897 and died 18-July-1987. She married William Fred Gibson in August 1915 and had 6 children, but I don't think it was the three that you have listed.., it looks like you've confused children with grandchildren. William Fred Gibson was born 4-JuIy-i897, died 4-June-i940, and is buried at Mountain Creek Baptist, Rutherford County, NC. Gladys is also buried at Mountain Creek Baptist, Rutherford County, NC.

William Fred Gibson and Gladys Lewis's oldest son was William Lewis Gibson (as you suggest).
William Lewis Gibson was married twice, and his second wife was Louise Kiser as you suggest.
Louise attended the 2002 Lewis Family Reunion and I believe she is still living.
William and Louise had 3 children --- you have 1 child -- Ronald Gibson. Their other 2 children are Carolyn and Doug... whom you have listed as William Lewis Gibson's siblings.., not as his children. The last that I heard, Ron, Carolyn, and Doug are all still living.

Norman Gibson, Daniel C Gibson, Hazel Gibson, Bruce H. Gibson, and Joyce Gibson are all children of William Fred Gibson and Gladys Lewis.... not of Doug and Libby.

William married Gladys LEWIS. Gladys (daughter of Pinckney Pitman LEWIS and Hattie Louvenia BOATWRIGHT) was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Gladys LEWIS was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina (daughter of Pinckney Pitman LEWIS and Hattie Louvenia BOATWRIGHT).

    Mr Marshall,

Pitman and Intha's 4th (and last) child. You have "Pickney Pittman Lewis". The Family Bible lists "Pinckney Pitman Lewis". The name "Pinckney" was used interchangbly with "Pinkney" ( particularly in the census), and was often abbreviated to "Pink". We already mentioned that Pitman was spelled both ways, although two "T"s was more widely used during the 1700's and one "I" was more widely used during the 1800's. My records suggest that Pinckney Pitman Lewis was born 18-August-1847 not 8-August-1847 as you suggest. (per gravemarker). You have his date-of-death correct.

Pinckney married Hattie Louvenia BOATWRIGHT. Hattie was born on 1 Nov 1866; died on 10 Jul 1942. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Hattie Louvenia BOATWRIGHT was born on 1 Nov 1866; died on 10 Jul 1942.

    Mr Marshall,

Pinckney Pitman Lewis married Hattie Louvenia Boatwright ( alternatively spelled Boatright).
"Boatwright" seems more widely used prior to 1875.
"Boatright" seems more widely used following 1875.

Pinckney Pitman Lewis and Hattie L Boatwright were married around 3-September-1891, supposedly performed by B. H. Hoyle ( Methodist). There are different ideas concerning the location --- some say Hattieā€™s hometown near Charlotte, others say Rutherford County. It may have been performed near Charlotte and recorded in Rutherford County.

Hattie L Boatwright was born 1 -November-1866 instead of 11-Novernber-1866. The date of death matches her grave marker. Pinckney Pitman Lewis and Hattie L Boatwright had 8 children as you suggest. Lila was born 24-September-1892.

    Children:
    1. 3. Gladys LEWIS was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina.
    2. Alva T. LEWIS was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina.
    3. Worth T. LEWIS was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina.
    4. Lila Belle LEWIS was born on 24 Sep 1892 in Rutherford County, North Carolina; died on 17 Dec 1968.
    5. Charlton P. LEWIS was born in 1895; died in 1933.
    6. Charles Wilber LEWIS was born on 29 Aug 1899 in Rutherford County, North Carolina; died on 15 Nov 1971.
    7. Hattie Elizabeth LEWIS was born in 1901 in Rutherford County, North Carolina; died in Mar 1974 in Asheville, North Carolina.
    8. Helen Lavonia LEWIS was born on 16 Aug 1905 in Rutherford County, North Carolina; died on 21 Nov 1965 in Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina; was buried in Nov 1965 in Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Pittman Lewis' name was interchangably "Pittman" and "Pitman". I strongly suspect that Pittman's maternal great-grandmother had a surname of "Pittman". While the name was commonly spelled "Pittman" during the 1700's, it was more commonly spelled "Pitman" during the 1800's. Pitman was born 14-August-1789, and died 21-April-1858 according to both the Family Bible and his gravemarker. Pitman's will is on record at the Rutherford County Courthouse.
Pitman Lewis married Intha Dalton in May 1837 in Rutherford County.
Intha Dalton's birthyear is uncertain and her gravemarker states her birthdate as "About 1805".
Intha was "about 32" when she married Pitman. Intha already had a daughter named "Jane Caroline Dalton" when Intha and Pitman were married. Jane's birthdate on the 1900 census ( Rutherford County, Green Hill Township ) was "Dec 1831", so Jane would have been about 5 years old when Pitman and Intha were married. Jane married George Martin Edwards in October 1848 in Rutherford County and had 6 children starting with Thomas Pinkney Edwards in October 1849. Pitman did not mention step-dau Jane Caroline Dalton Lewis Edwards in his will.
Pitman and Intha had 4 children of their own.

The oldest was Elizabeth Lewis, born 9-October-1838 according to the Family Bible, and Elizabeth married William Henry Cantrell and moved near Boiling Springs, Spartanburg County, SC. See the 1880 Spartanburg County SC census, Cherokee Township, district 140, sheet 19, line 36, house 173, William was listed as 49 years old and ill with what appears to be "Chronic-Dysentery". Elizabeth is listed as age 41, with 8 children. I have serious reservations about the census taker's record-keeping and suggestion that Elizabeth was born in SC -- I suspect she was actually born in Rutherford County.

William Henry Cantrell appears to have died by the 1900 census, and Elizabeth appears on the 1900 census in Spartanburg County, SC, at the age of 61.
I do not know when Elizabeth Lewis Cantrell died, but sometime after the 1900 census.

Pittman married Intha DALTON in May 1837 in ,Rutherford County, North Carolina. Intha was born in 1805; died on 7 Dec 1895 in , Rutherford County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  Intha DALTON was born in 1805; died on 7 Dec 1895 in , Rutherford County, North Carolina.
