Dear David,
I actually am doubly descended to Martin Marshall through my
grandmother Mary Vanhoy Southern.
Mary was the daughter of John Henry Vanhoy who married his second
cousin Leatha Marshall.
John was the son of Martin Vanhoy, son of Abraham and Verlinda
Marshall Vanhoy. Verlinda was one of Martin Marshall's daughters.
Leatha was a daughter of William Buchanan Marshall, who was a son of
Thomas R. Marshall, a son of Martin Marshall.
My father's father, John Martin Southern married first (1) Nancy B.
Marshall; and married (2) her niece, Mary Vanhoy. So all of my
father's half-brothers and sisters as well as his siblings are
descended from Martin Marshall.
Phyllis Hoots, the daughter of one of my father's nephews, a son of
Nancy B. and John Martin, is the person who found the Martin Marshall
cemetery in the woods. His stone is well-preserved. Our family is
trying to keep this cemetery cleared off, and still hopes for
permission from the owner of the land to install fencing. Without
the fencing, of course, the cemetery could be bulldozed away at any
time.

Subject: My father's name
Well, that's a sure sign of aging out! : )
My father was named Everette McKinley Southern by his Great-Uncle Joe
Marshall who was back in NC for a visit when daddy was born. My
father had his middle named legally changed to Mack, but my mother
hated that name, and he had to change it back to "McKinley." She
called him "Everette." Never underestimate the power of a woman,
especially you've been trying for 12 years to marry you!
If there is such an NC law, it is not always honored. A short time
after finding the Marshall cemetery, Phyllis found a very small
cemetery on the edge of a field which had the grave of Milly Waggoner
Marshall, and probably the graves of her father Joseph Waggoner and
Samuel Waggoner. Phyllis located the owner of the land and asked
him to give her time to get the money to put up a fence. When she
and a couple of cousins went back, those very old graves had been
bulldozed into dust!
We suspect that because the Martin Marshall cemetery contains so many
graves, the owner is a little more concerned about bringing in a
bulldozer.
All the best,
Odessa

in re: Jemina Vanhoy We've now found John Vanhoy's Will. He names as his second wife Jemina, but does not give her maiden name. One of his children is Abraham Vanhoy husband of Verlinda Boswell Marshall; father of Martin, and grandfather of John Henry Vanhoy who married his second cousin Leatha O. Marshall.
John Vanhoy owned land in Kent Co, DE, on Little Neck Creek, and we've found an Abraham Vanhoy Sr. who owned land there in the early-mid 1700s.
John married Leathia O. MARSHALL on 20 Jan 1860. Leathia (daughter of William Buchanan MARSHALL, (Bucky) and Nancy WEST) was born on 10 Sep 1835; died in 1913. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
